It was carved from a forearm, he played it once more…

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I watched as he approached me with his hood and his cloak
This wasn't a dream or a fancy dress joke
He looked eight feet tall and he wielded a scythe
He took one step closer and it seemed that he sighed
I tried to look past the hood to see his face
But his head stayed lowered as he closed the last pace
He slowly bent down and laid the scythe on the ground
The feeling was eerie, there wasn't a sound
[Verse 2]
He stood back up straight and he pulled back his hood
His features were skeletal, things weren't looking good
With his bony face bared he stared for a while
Then tilted his head and it looked like he'd smiled
I had no reaction, I just stood and stared back
He was waiting for fear, but it's a feeling I lack
I wasn't about to feed his dark power
There was a flash in the sky, then came the shower
---
[Chorus]
Face to face with the Angel of Death
Not a single word was said
He searched my soul instead of my fear
As silent tears were shed
The heavens watched, the earth stood still
The storm rolled overhead
I never bowed before the dark
Or feared the path I'd tread
---
[Verse 3]
He stretched out his arms, this enormous great man
Then out from his back spread a mighty wing span
They made him look taller, twelve feet or more
Then he folded his dark cloak and sat on the floor
He reached into his cloak and he pulled out a flute
He raised it to his lips and began to play
The sound that emerged was haunting and mellow
It echoed through silence in ghostly display
[Verse 4]
He drifted much closer to where I stood alone
It was then that I noticed the flute was a bone
It was carved from a forearm, he played it once more
As the eerie refrain seeped into my core
I was close enough now to look in his eyes
Deep, dark and hollow, no real surprise
Around his waist, beneath a thick leather strap
Hung fresh beating hearts against his lap
[Verse 5]
He finally stopped playing and rose to his feet
He stretched out his hand as he reached out for me
He pointed one finger and touched my chest
As burning pain tore through my breast
His finger burned deep as it reached my heart
Like white-hot steel or a blazing dart
I dropped to my knees, then struggled to stand
The pain overwhelming as I grasped his hand
[Verse 6]
With a slow gravel voice he started to say
"I came here to take you... today was your day.
I played you my music, yet still you stood fast.
Never once did you flinch as the moments all passed."
"It was then that I knew... you're a Warrior of God."
---
[Final Chorus]
Face to face with the Angel of Death
I never turned away
He looked beyond the fear of man
And spared my life that day
"Stand tall until I call again..."
Those words remain with me
For every breath belongs to God
Until He sets us free
Behind the Song
The Warrior of God was inspired by Paul's experience of surviving a serious heart attack. From that came the idea of an imagined encounter with the Angel of Death — a figure both terrifying and strangely measured.
Through vivid imagery, the story explores mortality, courage and quiet defiance, transforming a deeply personal event into something larger and more cinematic.

The Original Poem
The Warrior of God
(First Encounter)
I watched as he approached with his hood and his cloak
This wasn’t a dream or a fancy dress joke
He looked eight feet tall and he wielded a scythe
He took a step closer, and it seemed that he sighed
I tried to look past the hood to see his face
But his head was lowered as he took one more pace
He slowly stooped and placed the scythe on the ground
The feeling was eerie; there wasn’t a sound
He stood back up straight, and he pulled back his hood
His features were skeletal things weren’t looking good
With his bony face bared he stared for awhile
Then tilted his head and it looked like he’d smiled
I had no reaction; I just stood and stared back
He was expecting my fear but it’s a feeling I lack
I wasn’t willing to feed his dark power
There was a flash in the sky, and it started to shower
He stretched out his arms this enormous, great man
Then out from his back unfolded a wingspan
They made him look bigger 12ft or more
Then he spread his huge cape, and he sat on the floor
He reached into his cloak, and he pulled out a flute
Raised it to his mouth and he started to toot
The sound coming out was mellow and haunting
With his wings spread out wide the music was daunting
He seemed to float closer to where I stood all alone
It was then that I noticed that the flute was a bone
It was the bone of a forearm and he played it again
The mesmerising music was clouding my brain
I was close enough now to look into his eyes
They were deep, dark and hollow which was no real surprise
Around his waist held by a thick leather strap
Was bunch of fresh hearts still beating on his lap
He finally stopped playing and he rose to his feet
He extended his arm as he reached out for me
He pointed his finger and he touched my chest
As a burning pain ripped through my breast
He spoke as his finger burnt into my heart
With a searing pain like a scolding hot dart
I dropped to my knees then I tried to stand
The pain so intense as I grabbed his large hand
With a slow gravelly voice, he started to say
“I came to get you, today was your day”
“I played you my music, and you stood like a rod”
“It was then that I knew you’re a Warrior of God”
“I’ll leave you with memories, a scar on your heart”
“Until I return you will carry my mark”
“So, this day your family will have no need to cry”
“You stood up and faced me; you stared in my eye”
“This day you’ll remember, you’ve been reborn”
And as quick it came that huge figure was gone
The sky had now brightened as I lay there in pain
He’d left but he’d promised to come back again
I hope it’s a long time until he returns for me
The good things I can do and the good I can see
I’ll live everyday and I’ll do my best
Till I meet up again with that Angel of Death
